What is ARTAS Robotic FUE Hair Transplant Surgery and How does the ARTAS system work?
ARTAS® robotic-assisted hair transplantation is the latest advancement in the field of surgical hair restoration and the Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE technique of hair follicle harvesting. By leveraging the latest technology, the ARTAS system enhances and extends the artistic and surgical abilities of an experienced surgeon like Dr. Alan Bauman. During a robotic FUE hair transplant procedure, the ARTAS software and hardware system automates the harvesting of permanent follicular unit grafts from the “donor area,” or back and sides of the scalp, with incredible accuracy. The ARTAS system can also assist in automated Recipient Site Making according to Dr. Bauman’s artistic plan. In addition, the ARTAS Hair Studio helps enhance patient-surgeon communication by providing computer 3D preview imaging of expected hair transplant results.
Dr. Bauman discusses the benefits of ARTAS robotic assisted FUE hair transplant procedures in this video compared to the more invasive linear or strip style of harvesting.

The ARTAS robotic hair transplant system helps Dr. Bauman accurately harvest intact hair follicles from the donor area located in the back and sides of the scalp as well as assist in Recipient Site creation where the permanent follicles will be transplanted. The ARTAS software can also help Dr. Bauman provide a 3D computer preview imaging of your results. Watch the video below to see the benefits of ARTAS system from consultation to completion of your hair transplant procedure.
Why Do Patients Choose Robotic ARTAS FUE Hair Transplant Surgery?
Patients choose minimally-invasive robotic FUE hair transplantation with the ARTAS system for a number of important reasons. First, they want the benefit of FUE—the no-scalpel, no-stitch technique of harvesting of follicles from the donor area that leaves absolutely NO linear scar to hide. Secondly, they understand that ARTAS robotic assisted harvesting improves the accuracy and precision of the graft-harvesting process for FUE. The robot does not tire or fatigue—the 1,000th graft is harvested the same as the first. For those patients who are good candidates for robotic-assisted ARTAS Recipient Site Creation, they can feel comfortable that the recipient sites are being created between healthy existing hair without putting pre-existing hair in jeopardy.

How does ARTAS robotic FUE graft harvesting work?
Using specifications and parameters set by Dr. Bauman and guided by a sophisticated optical guidance system, the ARTAS robot identifies and extracts hair follicles from the patient’s donor area for transplantation. The robot’s optical guidance system works at 60 times per second to identify, measure and characterize available hair follicles for harvesting. Robotic FUE harvesting of grafts is performed hundreds to thousands of times during each hair transplant procedure session with a consistency of speed and accuracy that would be difficult to duplicate with the human hand.
In addition, the robot can also assist Dr. Bauman in creating recipient sites for the placement of follicular unit or FUE grafts according to a digital three-dimensional aesthetic plan that he designs.

History of FUE Hair Transplantation at Bauman Medical
The Bauman Hair Transplant and Hair Loss Treatment Center in Boca Raton Florida is among the first facilities worldwide to utilize the ARTAS Robotic System to perform FUE hair transplant surgery. However, unlike many other physicians who use ARTAS system without much prior FUE experience, FUE hair transplants have been a part of Dr. Bauman’s practice since 2001. Dr. Bauman performed and perfected manual and mechanized FUE hair transplantation long before it was commonly accepted (and now demanded) by patients, and long before most surgeons in the field of hair transplantation had even attempted to perform the challenging technique. Maintaining focus on the artistic creation of the hairline and other areas, in addition to performing and perfecting minimally-invasive FUE harvesting, has been Dr. Bauman’s goal for over a decade.
Dr. Alan Bauman and Bauman Medical Group is one of the most experienced FUE hair transplant teams in the world, having transplanted more than two million FUE grafts since 2001. Dr. Bauman presented the first poster presentation to the ISHRS on FUE hair transplantation at NY 2002 ISHRS Annual Scientific Meeting and demonstrated the first FUE surgery at the ISHRS Orlando Live Surgery Workshop in 2003. He has lectured extensively on FUE transplants and has pioneered a variety of instruments such as the “Bauman MINDEX” the first commercially-available FUE extraction tool, mechanized NeoGraft FUE, and many others. Dr. Bauman was the first to present “Mega-FUE” case reports of FUE procedure sessions of over 4,000 grafts each at international medical conferences.
Dr. Bauman was present at the launch of the ARTAS hair transplant robot in Anchorage, AK in 2011 and visited a research site to observe an ARTAS procedure. Since that time, Dr. Bauman has seen the robotic hardware and software improve the efficiency and accuracy of graft harvesting producing better quality grafts. Dr. Bauman has also seen the evolution of the robot in its ability to use smaller harvesting instruments that help minimize the trauma in the scalp as well as other features. In his new 11,000 sq ft facility, Dr. Bauman designed and constructed one of his procedure rooms specifically for robot-assisted hair transplant surgery because he believes this technology will continue to improve hair transplant results for his patients.
Manual NeoGraft vs. ARTAS Robotic FUE
Our experience transplanting literally millions of FUE grafts…
Dr. Bauman is one of the most experienced FUE hair transplant surgeons in the world.
As we have demonstrated at Bauman Medical, over the course of time and with extensive surgical experience, manual FUE harvesting can be highly accurate and efficient… however, manual harvesting still requires human judgment and is susceptible to operator fatigue.
To meet the demands of performing larger FUE procedures, we’ve found that by leveraging the best of both manual and robotic harvesting, Bauman Medical patients receive the “best of both worlds” in hair transplant technology. NeoGraft and the ARTAS system are simply two different “tools in the toolbox” each with their own pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses. When it comes to your procedure, Dr. Bauman will discuss whether ARTAS, NeoGraft or a combination of each may be utilized to achieve the best results in your hair transplant procedure.
One of the main benefits of combining ARTAS system and manual extraction using NeoGraft is the improvements in efficiency and accuracy during large sessions of hair transplantation called “Mega-FUE.”

Robotic-Assisted Recipient Site Creation
The ARTAS system can also assist Dr. Bauman in creating recipient sites where transplanted grafts will be placed into thinning or balding areas. Normally, the surgeon uses high-powered magnification, special lighting equipment and surgical instruments to create recipient sites between existing hairs. When appropriate, the surgeon can now utilize the ARTAS recipient-site creation feature to help improve precision in the recipient zone, minimizing trauma to surrounding hair and maximizing final densities.
When appropriate, Dr. Bauman will use a tablet PC and 3D simulation to specifically plan the density of recipient site creation, including the angle, orientation, and depth of sites. These parameters and programming instruct the ARTAS robot, which will execute the plan greater precision, speed and accuracy than could be accomplished with manual site creation. The most important part of this capability is the ARTAS robot’s ability to precisely “see” existing hairs in the recipient zone and avoid them while creating sites for implantation. This minimizes the chance of traumas to existing hairs and delivers exceptional density in the recipient zone.
The ARTAS Hair Studio is the design software used by Dr. Bauman to provide a “preview” image of the results of a proposed hair transplant procedure. This computer-aided design system also allows Dr. Bauman to instruct the robot on the creation of recipient sites.
Intricate areas such as the hairline, temporal point, “cowlicks,” or swirls in the crown area will still be created manually by Dr. Bauman in an artistic fashion–as needed as he has done in thousands of hair transplant procedures since 1997.

ARTAS Robotic Graft Selection
The ARTAS system can also allow Dr. Bauman to specifically select which size and type of follicular units to harvest—which has many benefits to the patient including minimizing the total amount of donor area harvested and thus minimizing the area that needs to be healed. By programming the robot to “skip” single-hair follicular units, ARTAS will extract more larger groupings of 2’s, 3’s and 4’s during extraction, and thus more hair follicles overall during the procedure.
If single-hair grafts are required for hairline creation, the larger grafts can be divided into smaller follicular units using stereomicroscopic dissection by the team of experienced Bauman surgical technicians. In this way, our extensive experience in performing thousands of traditional hair transplantation since 1997 is used to further enhance robotic ARTAS FUE hair transplants.
Bauman FACT: The Bauman Medical surgical team has nearly 100 years of combined experience in the field of hair transplantation.

ARTAS System Compared to Manual Extraction Methods
At Bauman Medical, we’ve used 0.8mm punch sizes to minimize trauma to the scalp and surrounding follicles in nearly every NeoGraft FUE hair transplant since 2007 with few exceptions. At the launch of the ARTAS system in 2011, only large punch sizes were available for robotic FUE. Recently, the availability of the significantly smaller 0.9mm ARTAS punch allows for similar minimization of trauma in robotic hair transplant cases, reigniting our interest in the device. The recent availability of smaller punch sizes that reduce trauma in the donor area is one of the main reasons ARTAS is considered to be “catching up” to devices used by experienced surgeons like NeoGraft—which have used smaller punch sizes for years. Some patients, such as those of African descent require the use of the slightly larger 1.0mm punch size in order to achieve accurate graft harvesting—the ARTAS robot allows for this flexibility.
Improvements in the ARTAS robotic system led Dr. Bauman to perform side-by-side testing and comparison research, proving the results and benefits of the ARTAS harvesting and recipient site creation features. In some cases, manual FUE graft extraction may be needed to achieve the desired result. This will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Bauman.

ARTAS Recipient Site Creation
When appropriate, Dr. Bauman will work with the patient to design a 3D preview image of the restored scalp, and from this plan a set of instructions will then be created for transfer to the robot for ARTAS Recipient Site Creation. Using the precise imaging system, the robot will create the recipient sites in the transplant zone according to the plan—at the angle, orientation and position designed by Dr. Bauman—all while avoiding any strong, terminal hair follicles in the area.
