HomeQuestion & Answers

How many hairs are there on the human head?

You are born with about 100,000 scalp hair follicles to start with, but it varies with natural hair color. Blondes have an average of 150,000 hairs, the average redhead has 90,000. Those with black or brown hair average 110,000 to 100,000 hairs.

*There are about 5 million hair follicles on the adult human body and men have a few hundred thousand more than women. These follicles are distributed fairly evenly throughout the body, with the exception of our hairless palms and soles.*

Shedding, hair thinning, decreased volume of hair and loss of scalp coverage are commons signs of hair loss, which can be treated.

How much hair shedding is normal?

Normal shedding can equal about 100-200 hairs per day. Normal shedding is due to the cycling of hair follicles on and off. Out of the ~100,000 hair follicles on your scalp, about 14% are not producing hair any given day. Each day some follicles turn on and some turn off, producing a release or shed of the hair fiber while the follicle is ‘resting.’  The less often you shampoo and brush your hair, the more shedding you will notice. Starting strong hair regrowth treatments like minoxidil or laser therapy can result in a strong, short-term shedding phase as follicles turn on and grow a new hair, the hair fibers push out the old resting hairs, which indicates the treatment is working*.

How Do I Evaluate Before & After Hair Transplant Photos?

For each photo, ask the name of the surgeon who performed the surgical procedure on the patient. This is important because in some chains and group practices, you may be presented with pictures of patients who underwent a procedure with a doctor who is no longer affiliated with the practice. Also, take note: Are the photos of patients with exposed hairlines or is the hair combed forward over the hairline? If the hairline is not visible in the photo, you will not be able to determine if the physician uses the latest medical technology and surgical hair restoration procedures. In close-up Before and After photos of hairlines with the hair combed back, you will be able to determine if the doctor used follicular units, which provides the most natural appearing hairline.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) & how is it used in hair regrowth?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is derived from a person’s own blood platelets which may be used to enhance hair growth as a stand-alone treatment or to improve the recovery and results of hair transplant surgery. In the field of cell therapy and tissue regeneration, research is continuing to progress regarding the use of PRP’s ability to stimulate stem cells, improve wound healing, and rejuvenate skin and hair follicles.

A small sample of blood is obtained from the patient. This sample is processed in an FDA-cleared device to separate the platelets and plasma from other components like red blood cells. Platelets may then be ‘activated,’ releasing powerful molecules which have profound biologic effects on hair follicles and skin. In some cases Extracellular Matrix or ECM (like ACell or BioD) may be added to the PRP. Under comfortable local anesthesia, this powerful cocktail of growth factors, cytokines and other proteins is painlessly injected into the area of scalp under local anesthesia where weak hair follicles exist. MicroPen microneedling of the skin is performed immediately following the injection to activate the platelets. The comfortable, outpatient procedure takes less than one hour to perform and patients may resume all activities, including workouts, shampooing, etc. immediately afterwards as there is no recovery phase*. Mild soreness and redness of the scalp, if any, resolves in less than a day and improved hair growth can be measured in a matter of weeks.

What is HairCheck?

HairCheck® is a quick, painless, non-invasive way to measure and track the amount and quality of hair growing in a given area of the scalp (called the Hair Mass Index, HMI, “HairNumber,” or “HairScore”). The HairCheck device is a highly sensitive hand-held ‘trichometer,’ which scientifically measures hair caliber and hair density together and expresses them as a single number by compressing and measuring a defined hair bundle. It can also measure the percentage of hair breakage, which is a common cause of hair loss. Tracking these numbers can help determine the extent of hair loss and/or breakage and over time, allows the tracking of results from treatments.

The validity of HairCheck also called “cross-sectional hair bundle measurement,” and the stereotactic tool used to go back to exactly the same area of the scalp without having to make a tattoo or other marking after an appropriate interval of treatment has been the subject of many peer-reviewed articles and medical presentations.  Hundreds of professionals have been trained in the use of the HairCheck tool and medical hair loss management treatment protocols through the HairCoach certification program.

Patients are typically quite happy to find out that HairCheck measurements take about five to ten minutes to perform, are painless, and require no trimming of the existing hair.  At Bauman Medical, HairCheck visits are complimentary for existing patients.

To schedule your HairCheck consult and help determine effective medical treatments and procedures that are right for you, please request a consultation with hair loss expert and American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) Board-Certified Hair Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Alan J. When can you expect to ‘see’ results with Laser Therapy treatments like LaserCap?

Because hair fibers are produced at a growth rate of about 1cm per month, even with consistent use it can take six to twelve MONTHS to see visible changes in your hair* in the mirror. However, by using an accurate scientific measuring device like HairCheck which takes cross-sectional hair bundle (Hair Mass) measurements*, it becomes easy to monitor your scalp’s response to laser therapy in just a few weeks. Sometimes, one area of the scalp improves more than another… many patients ask “why?”*
The answer is that the improvement with Laser Therapy treatment with LaserCap will be proportional to the amount of weak hair in a given area. The higher numbers of weaker hair follicles, the greater the improvement in Hair Mass. If the density in a given area is very weak, improvements will be less dramatic. In addition, if the hair density and thickness is excellent in a given area of scalp, the improvement in that location will also be less dramatic. It may seem counter intuitive, but just like other non-invasive treatments like Minoxidil (Formula 82M, etc.) and PRP with ACell, the response in each area will be proportional to the amount of hair that can be modulated or improved. High-powered magnification of the scalp or Dermoscopy with a device like the HairCam can help your hair loss specialist determine which areas are likely to respond to non-invasive treatment and which areas will need minimally-invasive hair transplantation with NeoGraft FUE.

At Bauman Medical Group, during your hair loss consultation Dr. Bauman will evaluate several areas of your scalp using HairCheck measurements and HairCam micro-dermoscopy and then prescribe a treatment plan based on your hair loss status in each area and hair restoration goals.

What can a woman experiencing shedding or thinning hair do?

Because medical research has yet to identify the specific trigger for female pattern hair loss, there is no one particular treatment option that is the ‘magic bullet.’ While most women are looking for the ‘miracle cure,’ unfortunately the answer for the vast majority of hair loss sufferers will be a multi-therapy approach. A “multi-therapy” approach, like the one advocated by Dr. Bauman, uses a combination of available technologies that have been shown to have positive results for patients. Just like the classic combination of ‘diet and exercise’ for weight control and general health, most often it is a combination of various treatments that yield the best results.

A complete medical history, hair loss history, scalp exam (with and without a microscope), laboratory tests, etc. may be required to ‘get to the bottom’ of your hair loss problem. Dr. Bauman may then recommend one, two or more various therapies designed to maintain and enhance the hair you have as well as restore hair you may have lost. A multi-therapy regimen may include nutritional supplementation, medications, laser therapy, specific hair-care products or regimens, and/or hair transplantation. For some, a non-invasive approach will be worthwhile and for others invasive treatments may need to be added to the regimen. Note: Without exception, all non-invasive treatments will need to be continued in order to maintain the results you achieve*. Discontinuing a non-invasive hair restoration treatment will likely lead to a regression (loss) of results*. How quickly the ‘results’ are lost varies depending on a variety of factors including the severity of the hair loss process and the specific treatments being discontinued.

What is the best way to lower a high or receding hairline?

For both men and women, hair transplantation is the best way to lower a receding hairline*. The hairline is a highly visible area so therefore care must be taken when designing an appropriate shape, including the temples and temporal point areas, so the end result looks natural both from far away and close up. Male hairlines are different than female. Everyone has a unique shape that “fits” aesthetically to form the frame of their face. Keep in mind that ARTISTRY–the size, angle, orientation and position of each transplanted hair follicle graft–is critical for a 100% naturally looking result.

Other options like flaps or browlift type surgeries involves a scalpel incision, stitches or staples, linear scars and significantly more risk, downtime and postoperative pain when compared to modern hair transplants.

When it comes to hair transplantation, the less invasive NeoGraft Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair follicle harvesting technique avoids a linear scar in the donor area and heals more comfortably and quickly, but the key ingredient is a experienced, board-certified hair transplant surgeon with an “aesthetic eye.”

Can testosterone replacement, “testosterone boosting” herbs like Tribulus Terrestris, or supplements like Creatine contribute to hair loss?

Yes, it’s considered risky for those susceptible to hair loss. We know in the body, testosterone gets converted to DHT dihydrotestosterone, a known trigger for hereditary hair loss or androgenetic alopecia.

Although we don’t know the specific action or effectiveness of many of these “testosterone boosting” herbs and supplements, the use of Tribulus Terrestris may in fact be risky for those with hair loss. But, as of now, there’s no definitive answer. Though the herb T. Terrestris (Tribulus Terrestris) was popularized by a 1970’s bodybuilder to increase the body’s natural testosterone, human studies have failed to prove that it increases testosterone or strength. Animal studies in rats, rabbits and primates have demonstrated ambiguous results or results that were not statistically significant. Only one single animal study showed that it altered sexual behavior in castrated rats by theoretically stimulating androgen receptors in the rats’ brains. Another animal study found that administration of Tribulus terrestris extract produced statistically significant increases in levels of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone, and produces effects suggestive of aphrodisiac activity. This is where things get risky for hair loss patients.

The most important thing for your readers/viewers to understand is that if they are genetically predisposed to hereditary hair loss (male pattern hair loss), ANYTHING they do which increases the body’s testosterone level naturally or unnaturally poses a risk to the hair follicles because testosterone becomes dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. Dihydrotestosterone is the primary trigger for male pattern baldness. For example, testosterone replacement can significantly accelerate the hair follicle miniaturization associated with male pattern baldness, unless they are on a medical hair loss management regimen.

If someone is not sure if they are at risk for hereditary hair loss and wants to check, there’s a simple cheek-swab genetic DNA test for that called HairDX as well as other non-invasive evaluations that can be performed using HairCam dermoscopy and HairCheck cross-sectional bundle measurement comparisons. These are evaluations we commonly perform during an initial hair loss evaluation at Bauman Medical Group.

Bodybuilders, pro athletes, hormone replacement patients and many others often seem to have trouble maintaining good quality hair growth. However, there are many effective medical hair loss treatments to help stop and reverse the effects of the DHT: finasteride, minoxidil, laser therapy, nutraceuticals, cell therapy (PRP), etc. and there are ways to scientifically evaluate and measure what is going on at the level of the scalp before, during and after anything that may boost DHT so we know what is working. Advanced treatments like compounded finasteride FinPlus, compounded minoxidil Formula 82M, the powerful/portable/discreet LaserCap, nutritionals, Platelet Rich Plasma with ECMs like BioD are all at the leading edge of treatment.

On a separate note, we’ve seen supplements like Creatine–commonly found in pre-workout and post-workout recovery shakes–now proven in humans to increase DHT dihydrotestosterone, confirming the hair loss risks we predicted years ago after we saw hair loss in those patients using it. (Therefore, supplements can sometimes cause trouble for hair loss patients!)

When it comes to hair regrowth, which can be subtle at first, self-monitoring rarely works so encourage your viewers to seek out a board-certified hair restoration physician that can perform seasonal HairCheck cross sectional bundle measurements, diagnostic genetic testing (if needed), prescribe an effective medical regimen and track the progress. Good luck!

Sincerely,
Dr. Alan J. Bauman, M.D. – Diplomate, American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery – Medical Director, Bauman Medical Group

Who is a good candidate for a ‘Healthy Scalp, Healthy Hair’ Trichology Evaluation?

Trichology, derived from the Greek word “tricho” meaning “hair,” is the study of the anatomy, growth and diseases of the hair and scalp. An unhealthy scalp can make growing healthy hair a challenge. Trichology treatments help manage excess sebum, dandruff, toxins and impurities—improving scalp wellness and allowing optimal hair growth. Men and women with a “symptomatic scalp” (dry, itchy, flaky or oily scalp, excessive hair loss, shedding or hair breakage) should schedule a trichology evaluation. Patients considering or already using at-home hair regrowth treatments, PRP Platelet Rich Plasma or a hair transplant procedure should also consider a trichology treatment to maximize their results. Why do so many men and women experience excessive shedding in February?

When your body thinks it’s starving, it doesn’t make ‘luxury’ items like hair. This can be bad news for the millions of Americans who have spent the last month going to extreme measures to lose the pounds the packed on during the holiday season.

What many dieters don’t realize is, the “crash” diets often seen this time of year are not only bad for your health, but they are bad for your hair. Caloric, iron and protein deficiencies are among the most common nutritional triggers for unhealthy hair, including excessive shedding and thinning.

Each February hair restoration physicians see an influx of new patients seeking answers to the sudden hair shedding and thinning.  What many of these patients don’t realize is, the hair loss they are experiencing is a direct result of the diet they started four to six weeks earlier. Patients are not only surprised to learn that their diet is behind their hair loss, but many also falsely believe that hair thinning will stop as soon the end their diet, which is a dangerous misconception. The effect of diet on your hair is proportional to an individual’s risk for hereditary hair loss. For instance, for those who are genetically predisposed to male or female pattern hair loss, the crash diet may be the catalyst to an onset of symptoms and problems. For most people, nutrition-related hair loss is usually temporary, but be prepared, once the diet is stabilized, it can still take six to 10 months for the hair to return to normal*.

It can be difficult to assess the root cause of sudden hair loss, it is essential for patients to consult a hair loss specialist, a board-certified hair restoration physician who can help assess the damage, choose a course of treatment if necessary, and track and monitor future hair thinning as well as their response to treatment.

The HairCheck device is one of the many tools used to determine the extent of damage to a patient’s hair. HairCheck is a simple, painless, non-invasive way to measure and track the amount of hair growing in a given area of scalp (called your Hair Mass Index or “HairNumber”). The highly sensitive hand-held ‘trichometer,’ measures hair caliber and hair density together and expresses them as a single number, it can also measure the percentage of hair breakage, which is a common cause of hair loss. Tracking these numbers can help determine the extent and rate of a patient’s hair loss and/or breakage and inform them of any changes over time. HairCheck can also be used to quantify the degree of hair breakage from harsh hair care regimens or extreme diets.

While the HairCheck and other tools allow doctors a better understanding of the damage a patient’s hair has suffered, the best way to protect your hair is through preventative measures. And the simplest preventative action is a healthy diet, which gives your hair the vitamins and nutrients it needs. Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet with plenty of protein is important for maintaining healthy hair growth. However, in addition to protein, there are many other nutrients that are needed to maintain the thickness, growth rate and healthy appearance of the hair strands. These include vitamins A, B and C, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. For this reason, foods like fish, dark green vegetables, red meat and nuts are especially good for maintaining healthy hair.

To help stimulate healthy hair growth and reverse damage to your follicles, your hair may benefit from a boost to jumpstart the healing process. Originally approved for hair loss, low level laser “combs,” “hoods” and new FDA-approved “laser caps” are now being used by patients to create longer, thicker, fuller, healthier hair.  Nutritional supplements like the fish-protein based Viviscal Pro, and pharmaceutical-grade biotin, along with prostaglandin analogs can all boost the vitality of your hair.

Just remember, how you eat can determine how healthy, or unhealthy, your hair is, so think twice before starting an extreme diet – or you might lose more than a few pounds.

Dr. Bauman’s Nutrition Tips for Healthy Hair

  • Iron and protein deficiencies are among the most common nutritional triggers for unhealthy hair, while vitamins, especially B, are important to the overall health of your hair and preventing hair loss and thinning.
  • Some of the best food choices for healthy hair include salmon, which is loaded with omega-3 fatty acid, dark green vegetables for vitamins A and C, and Nuts, which are a terrific source of zinc, which can prevent hair shedding.
  • Many women take calcium supplements to improve their health – but the same should also be true for hair supplements. Scientifically developed treatments like Viviscal Pro and Biotin actually create longer, thicker, healthier hair.
  • Hair loss may be a sign of a serious medical condition so seek the advice of a hair loss specialist so diagnosis, measuring and monitoring can be performed.

What is a CNC?

A CNC is durable and beautiful high-quality medical-grade hair and scalp cranial prosthesis hair replacement system for men or women. CNC literally means “Capelli Naturali a Contatto” or “Natural Hair Attached.” CNC hair systems are made with 3D-printing technology and 100% unprocessed human hair in Bologna, Italy by Cesare Ragazzi Laboratories.  It requires 39 production steps, numerous quality checks and 240 man-hours in order to create a CNC hair replacement system over approximately 12 weeks. According to measurements or “parameters” obtained in the clinic and sent to the production facility in Bologna, an ultra-thin, lightweight, dermato-compatible, flexable, comfortable, breathable, antimicrobial polymeric base is precisely sized and colored to match skin tone and texture. Then, proper color, texture and length hair strands are meticulously sewn or implanted individually into the base with careful attention to natural hair patterns and angles. Once sent back to the clinic, the CNC Italian Hair System is secured with a medical grade adhesive. The recipient is unrestricted in terms of activity, lifestyle and hair care–this includes shampooing and hair care, hair styling, athletics, etc. CNC is perfectly suited for hair enhancement as an alternative to damaging wigs, weave and extensions, as well as hair replacement for alopecia due to auto-immune conditions, chemotherapy, burns, radiation or other injury as well as cases of severe hair loss.

What is the Best Rogaine Minoxidil Alternative?

The best alternative to Rogaine is Compounded Formula 82M Topical Minoxidil. Our patients confirm that Formula 82M is less greasy, less gooey, quick-drying, fast absorbing and less impactful on their hairstyle than over-the-counter rogaine or generic minoxidil. They also find compounded prescription Formula 82M to be a powerful hair growth treatment that is easy to use twice a day with less skin irritation and other side effects. Formula 82M is the highest ranked topical minoxidil product on popular review sites.

What is non-surgical hairline advancement?

Non-surgical Hairline Advancement uses minimally-invasive FUE hair transplant techniques to microsurgically redistribute individual hair follicles in an artistic fashion to undetectably lower a hairline and reduce forehead size as an alternative to invasive, painful and risky surgical expanders, surgical skin flaps, linear or strip harvesting, long scalpel cuts or incisions, and the use of stitches or staples. Benefits include more natural results, less postoperative pain, less risk of major infections, a faster and less restricted recovery phase and absolutely no linear scar to hide in the donor or hairline areas. Hairline advancement and hairline lowering is used in patients with genetically receded hairlines, high hairlines or big foreheads to create a youthful, more aesthetic frame of the face.  Who performs Hairline Advancement or Hairline Lowering? Seek out an ABHRS-certified, IAHRS-accepted, FISHRS, full-time hair restoration surgeon, like Dr. Alan J. Bauman, MD, ABHRS, FISRHS.

VIDEO: CapillusRx 312 Laser Therapy Cap REVEALED at ISHRS World Hair Transplant Congress 2017!

Clinically Proven Technology:

Over 95% of active clinical study participants had an increase in hair counts within 17 weeks.

Active study participants showed 51% more hair within 17 weeks[1].

Results described here are for the CapillusPro model for which an independently-reviewed, double-blind clinical trial study was conducted. The CapillusRx 312 uses the same technology as the CapillusPro and differs in number of lasers for effects over a larger area of the scalp. Dr. Alan J. Bauman, MD has treated thousands of patients with laser therapy since 1998 when he acquired his first in-office laser device. He was an early adopter of the hands-free laser therapy cap devices in 2007 which significantly out-performed older, outdated devices like the comb-lasers. All laser therapy patients are tracked using the HairCheck device which monitors progress and predicts the visible results to come.

Dr Bauman Capillus Rx 774x800 What is the CapillusRx Laser Therapy Cap?

How to Use:

Wear for just 6 minutes every day under a sports cap. Its ease of use encourages compliance for maximum results. You can wear the device with the provided hat or any other hat or scarf of your preference. It works for both men and women by providing laser therapy to the follicles on the scalp by treating hair loss and hair thinning at home or on-the-go without medication, surgery, or reported adverse side-effects.  If you begin treatment during the earlier stages of progression, the CapillusRx can reduce further hair loss and regrow the hair that has begun to thin. Because hair loss and hair thinning is a medical condition, Dr. Bauman recommends a comprehensive consultation to diagnose and measure your hair status and HairCheck measurements over time to ensure you are receiving the expected benefits.

What to Expect:

Keep in mind that it takes time for hair to grow. You will not notice results immediately as it takes time to restore follicle health and then for the new strands of hair to grow. The following is a general guideline of what to expect in your hair restoration journey:

  • 0–3 Months:The first thing you may or may not notice is an increase in shedding. If this is the case, don’t worry. Initial hair shedding is actually a sign that the treatment is working – indicating that new anagen hairs are pushing out the older hairs to make way for healthy new shaft of hair. Some itchiness might be experienced at this point in the process as the arrector pili muscles linked to the follicle contract. Baseline photos and HairCheck measurements are recommended before starting ANY hair growth treatment.
  • 3–6 Months:Next, you will begin to notice a decrease in hair loss. After the first few weeks of using your device according to the instructions, you will notice that hair is not shedding as much as previously. Do not be discouraged if you don’t see significant change. Keep in mind that preventing progression of hair loss is in itself a success. You may notice that your hair is slightly fuller in the areas that you had noticed thinning. Measurements with HairCheck will start to improve, predicting the visible improvements yet to come.
  • 12 Months:This is the time to evaluate the results of laser therapy. We recommend repeat HairCheck measurements and photos to compare to baseline.
  • 24 Months +:This is when you should see the greatest and most impactful results. Expect to see the most you can get from Capillus laser therapy at this point. For as long as you continue to comply with laser therapy, you should maintain a fuller head of hair and reduction of hair loss.

What is the optimal platelet concentration for PRP for hair growth?

Q: What is the optimal concentration of platelets in PRP for hair regrowth?

A: Research suggests that a concentration of ~1.5M platelets/microliter is the “sweet spot” for stem cell proliferation & migration (Haynesworth 2002) and new blood vessel formation (Giusti 2009) and the addition of ECMs like ACell or BioD provide a stronger and longer response to treatment than PRP alone.*

In other words, “not all PRP for hair growth is created equal.”  Skill, knowledge, equipment and experience all need to come together to provide a substantial result, instead of just “hope” for your hair loss. In this photo you can see the ‘before’ and ‘after’ results of Dr. Bauman’s centrifugation and separation protocol which delivered 7.5ml of more than 1.5M platelets/microliter for this PRP patient who started with a baseline platelet concentration of 246,000 platelets/microliter.  1ml of BioD placental extracellular matrix ECM was added to the final PRP before application.

Q: Is Minoxidil / Rogaine safe when pregnant?

Q: Is Minoxidil / Rogaine Safe When Pregnant?

Topical Minoxidil Pregnancy Warnings

A: Minoxidil, the active ingredient found in topical solutions like rogaine, generic, solutions, foam, and pharmacy compounded Formula 82M, has been assigned by the FDA to pregnancy Category C. In Category C, animal reproductive studies reveal adverse effects on the fetus, but there are no adequate or well-controlled studies in humans. In other words, human risk cannot be ruled out, therefore: NOT safe.

Teratogenic Effects / Birth Defects

Minoxidil is listed as Pregnancy Category C:
Oral administration of minoxidil has been associated with evidence of increased fetal resorption in rabbits but not rats, when administered at five times the maximum recommended oral antihypertensive human dose. There was no evidence of teratogenic effects in rats and rabbits. Subcutaneous administration of minoxidil to pregnant rats at 80 mg/kg/day was maternally toxic but not teratogenic. Higher subcutaneous doses produced evidence of developmental toxicity. There are no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women. Minoxidil should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Nursing Mothers and Minoxidil

There has been one report of minoxidil excretion in the breast milk of a woman treated with 5mg oral minoxidil twice daily for hypertension. Because of the potential for adverse effects in nursing infants from minoxidil absorption, minoxidil should not be administered to a nursing woman.

At Bauman Medical, we recommend stopping topical minoxidil Formula 82M when pregnant or nursing. Contact Dr. Alan Bauman to ask a question about Minoxidil Safety When Pregnant

Q: Does Hair Transplantation Work for Ethnic or African American Hair?

Q: Does FUE Hair Transplantation Work for Ethnic or African-American Hair?

A: In a word, YES!  FUE transplants can work very successfully in men and women of African / Caribbean descent.

However, genetically the hair follicles of those of African or Caribbean ethnic heritage are typically more curly and kinky, which are responsible for producing the kinky, curly hair fibers we see. FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction is the method that harvests the hair follicle grafts individually that leaves no linear scar behind.  Because the follicles are more curved under the scalp, FUE hair transplant harvesting is more challenging and requires special instrumentation, special techniques and–most importantly–experience. However, the same rules apply in African-Caribbean patients as they do in other ethnicities: the hair follicles around the sides and back of the scalp–called the Donor Area–are more permanent than the areas at the hairline, temples, frontal, mid-scalp or crown areas. Therefore, the transplanted hair follicles will live and grow in their new location permanently.
