Pubic Hair Transplant
Pubic hair can change over time for many of the same reasons that affect hair elsewhere on the body. Aging, genetics, hormonal changes, previous hair removal, surgery, scarring, certain medical treatments, or naturally sparse growth may leave some people with less pubic hair than they would prefer. For patients who want a more permanent way to restore or reshape hair in this area, a pubic hair transplant may be an option.
A pubic hair transplant uses a patient’s own healthy hair follicles to add hair to areas where growth is thin, uneven, or absent. The procedure may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to restore hair following surgery, injury, or scarring. Because the transplanted follicles are living follicles, they can continue producing hair long after the area has healed.
At Bauman Medical, Dr. Alan Bauman brings decades of experience in hair restoration to procedures requiring careful follicle selection, placement, and aesthetic planning. Pubic hair transplantation is a highly individualized treatment because natural-looking results depend not simply on adding hair, but on recreating an appropriate pattern, density, direction, and distribution.
Hair transplantation involves moving healthy follicles from a donor area of the patient’s body to the treatment area. In most cases, donor follicles are obtained from areas of the scalp where hair growth is stable.
During the consultation, Dr. Bauman evaluates the amount of existing pubic hair, the areas the patient would like restored, the condition of the skin, and the availability and characteristics of potential donor hair. The desired shape and density can also be discussed before a treatment plan is developed.
An important consideration is that hair maintains many of the characteristics of the area from which it was taken. Scalp hair, for example, generally grows longer than natural pubic hair. For this reason, selecting appropriate donor follicles is important. Patients may also need to periodically trim transplanted hairs once growth becomes established.
The number of follicles required varies considerably. Someone seeking improvement in a relatively small area may require substantially fewer grafts than a patient who wants more extensive restoration.
Pubic hair transplantation is generally performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia. Patients are typically awake and comfortable throughout treatment.
Individual follicular units can be harvested from the donor area using follicular unit extraction, commonly called FUE. With this technique, follicles are removed through very small openings rather than through a long surgical incision.
Once the donor follicles have been prepared, tiny recipient sites are created within the pubic region. This stage requires considerable precision. Natural pubic hair does not simply grow straight outward from the skin. Individual hairs emerge at specific angles and directions, and these patterns can change throughout the area.
The follicles are therefore positioned according to the planned design so that the new growth blends as naturally as possible with existing hair. Depending on the goals of treatment, grafts may be distributed to increase overall density, fill isolated areas of thinning, conceal certain scars, or create a different hair pattern.
The length of the procedure depends primarily on the number of grafts being transplanted and the complexity of the restoration.
There is no single price for every pubic hair transplant because each procedure is customized. Cost is influenced by the number of follicles required, the size of the treatment area, donor-hair harvesting requirements, and the complexity of the desired design.
A relatively small restoration may require fewer grafts and therefore cost less than a procedure intended to create substantially greater coverage.
An individualized consultation at Bauman Medical allows the treatment area and donor hair to be evaluated so that a more accurate estimate can be provided. Because pubic hair transplantation is usually considered an elective cosmetic procedure, it is generally not covered by health insurance.
Most patients can return home shortly after the procedure. Mild tenderness, redness, swelling, or small crusts around the transplanted follicles can occur during the early healing period. The donor area may also feel temporarily sensitive.
Patients receive instructions about cleansing the area, clothing, activity, and protecting the newly implanted grafts. Loose-fitting clothing may be more comfortable during the first several days because unnecessary rubbing or pressure should be avoided while the follicles are becoming established.
Strenuous exercise, sexual activity, swimming, and other activities that could create friction or expose the treatment area to bacteria may need to be temporarily restricted. Dr. Bauman and the Bauman Medical team provide specific guidance based on how the procedure was performed and how the patient is healing.
The transplanted hairs commonly shed during the first several weeks. This is an expected part of the hair transplantation process and does not mean the follicles have been lost. The follicles remain beneath the skin and gradually begin producing new hairs.
Visible new growth generally develops over the following months. Hair density continues to improve as additional follicles enter their active growth cycle, with the overall appearance becoming increasingly established over approximately 9 to 12 months.
Pubic hair transplantation requires a different aesthetic approach from restoration of the scalp, eyebrows, beard, or other areas. Follicles must be placed with careful attention to hair direction, spacing, density, and the patient’s anatomy.
Dr. Alan Bauman’s extensive experience in surgical hair restoration allows each procedure to be planned around the individual patient rather than using a standardized pattern. For appropriate candidates, pubic hair transplantation can provide a lasting way to restore hair using the patient’s own follicles while creating an appearance designed to blend naturally with the surrounding area. Prospective patients can schedule a consultation to learn how pubic hair transplantation will help them achieve their goals.
