Preparing for FUE Hair Transplant Surgery
At Bauman Medical, Dr. Alan Bauman personally designs and performs minimally invasive, no-linear-scar FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant procedures around each patient’s individual goals. Proper preparation in the weeks and days before your procedure helps protect your results, minimize complications, and make your surgery day as comfortable as possible. Here is what to expect as you prepare for your FUE hair transplant.
- Avoid aspirin, Vitamin E, garlic, and ginseng supplements, which can interfere with clotting; Tylenol is an acceptable substitute.
- If prescribed, continue oral minoxidil and finasteride before, during, and after your procedure.
- Continue topical minoxidil up through the morning of your procedure.
- Continue laser therapy up until the day before your procedure.
- Stop smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. Smokers, ex-smokers, and anyone with a history of slow healing should discuss options with Dr. Bauman before their procedure.
- Cut, color, or perm your hair up until the day before surgery; these can resume two weeks after your procedure.
- Continue avoiding aspirin and blood-thinning herbs or supplements.
- Prioritize rest and proper nutrition.
- We will arrange your transportation to and from the office — you will not be able to drive yourself home.
- If you live more than 60 minutes away, plan to stay overnight in Boca Raton before and after your procedure. Our team can help coordinate accommodations.
On the morning of your procedure, you will check in after arriving through Bauman Medical’s private surgical elevator entrance in Boca Raton, where your informed consent is reviewed and any questions are answered. Antibiotics, anti-swelling and anti-bruising medications, along with a mild sedative, are provided, and Low Level Laser Therapy is administered before your scalp is cleansed using our mechanical antiseptic scalp-wash system. After pre-operative photos are taken, Dr. Bauman personally designs your donor and recipient areas with your input and marks the plan for your approval.
Throughout the procedure, Dr. Bauman and a team of up to five microsurgical technicians work together: Dr. Bauman artistically creates each recipient site, determining the angle, orientation, and position of every transplanted follicle. Then, each FUE graft, which contains 1-3 hair follicles, is harvested one at a time.
The surgical team assists in sorting, counting, and placement of the harvested grafts under his supervision. The full procedure typically takes several hours, with breaks, lunch, and entertainment options available throughout. Most patients are discharged with a light bandage, prescriptions, and detailed aftercare instructions by early evening.
Once your procedure is complete, healing begins right away. Visit our FUE Hair Transplant Recovery page for a full breakdown of what to expect in the days, weeks, and months after your surgery, from your 24-hour post-operative check through your 12-month results.
If you are struggling with hair loss, Bauman Medical offers a personalized, physician-led approach to help you achieve the results you deserve, from your first pre-operative consultation through your final results. Dr. Alan Bauman and his team see patients at Bauman Medical’s headquarters in Boca Raton, Florida, and at the practice’s New York satellite location, serving patients throughout Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and beyond.
