FUE Hair Transplant Procedure Explained
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is an advanced hair restoration procedure that relocates individual hair follicles from a donor area, typically the back or sides of the scalp, to areas experiencing thinning or hair loss. Each follicle is removed one at a time using a precise, minimally invasive technique, which avoids the need for a linear incision. This results in natural-looking growth and minimal visible scarring. FUE is considered the gold standard in hair restoration. It is widely chosen by patients seeking lasting results, a discreet solution, faster recovery, and the flexibility to wear shorter hairstyles without concern about a noticeable linear scar.
Once extracted, each graft is carefully inspected under magnification. Any excess tissue is trimmed, and the follicles are sorted based on size and quality. The grafts are then stored in a controlled environment to maintain hydration and viability. Proper handling during this stage directly impacts how well the transplanted hair will grow.
Tiny recipient sites are created in the thinning or balding areas. These sites are strategically placed to match the natural direction, angle, and density of existing hair. Each graft is then implanted individually into these sites. Single-hair grafts are typically placed along the hairline for a soft, natural appearance, while multi-hair grafts are used to build density behind it.
The final phase of implantation focuses on refining density and ensuring even distribution across the treated area. Attention to detail at this stage ensures there are no gaps, unnatural patterns, or inconsistencies. The goal is to create seamless integration with the patient’s existing hair so that the result appears completely natural.
After the procedure, patients receive detailed instructions for care in the first few days. The scalp may show mild redness and small scabs where grafts were placed, which is expected and temporary. Patients are invited to return to the office the next day for examination and scalp wash, and may return daily until fully healed. Alternatively, patients are guided on how to wash their hair, protect the grafts, and avoid unnecessary friction or pressure. Most individuals can return to normal activities within a few days, with visible healing occurring over the first one to two weeks. Hair growth begins gradually, with noticeable improvements developing over several months as the transplanted follicles establish themselves and produce new, permanent hair.
FUE is a highly refined procedure that combines precision, planning, and artistry. When performed by an experienced hair restoration surgeon, it delivers natural, lasting results without the drawbacks of older surgical methods.
At Bauman Medical, hair restoration goes beyond the transplant procedure itself. Because hair loss is often an ongoing process, treatment plans may incorporate complementary therapies such as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Exosome Therapy, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), and prescription medications to support existing hair, promote a healthier scalp environment, and optimize long-term results. Each treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s unique pattern of hair loss, goals, and overall hair restoration strategy.
